Activities

  • On November 1, 2023, the water purifier donation ceremony for CMS L P School, Kallumala, began at 9:30 AM with a warm welcome from the school staff and students. The event was inaugurated by our college Principal Dr Ranjith Mathew Abraham and dedicated by Rev. Levin Koshy Mallasseril, and was graced by the Vice Principal, dedicated faculty members, NSS and Bhoomithrasena coordinators and student volunteers. The donation was received with gratitude from the school Headmistress, teachers, and students. This event portrays our commitment to community well-being and supports Sustainable Development Goal 6 for clean water access, ensuring a healthier and more productive environment for all. Providing the school with a water purifier not only ensures a healthier and more productive environment for the students but also aligns with the broader global goals of promoting clean and accessible water sources, ultimately contributing to the achievement of sustainable development in our region. Overall, the handover ceremony was a heartwarming and significant event that showcased the college's commitment to giving back to the local community.
  • Ms. Besteena Esther, Guest Faculty, Department of Botany and Biotechnology, Bishop Moore College Mavelikara conducted an engaging forum on "Journey to a Greener Future," aligning with this year’s World Environment Day theme. The interactive session emphasized on food security, exploring innovative solutions and fostering dynamic discussions among participants, contributing to a holistic understanding of sustainable practices. The event showcased the college’s commitment to nurturing environmentally conscious leaders, leaving attendees inspired and motivated to champion the cause of a greener tomorrow.
  • On the occasion of World Environment Day, Bhoomithrasena club organized an endemic tree planting event. The event was extended to an RET garden weeding and manuring activity as well. This initiative aimed to raise awareness about the importance of preserving and promoting native plant species, enhance the ecological value of the campus, and encourage sustainable practices among students and staff. The tree planting initiative was inaugurated by the planting of a 6 year old seedling of Gluta travancorica vernacularly known as 'ചെങ്കുറിഞ്ഞി' Dr. Renjith Mathew Abraham, the Principal of Bishop Moore College, in the presence of the Vice Principal, Dr. Anne Angeline Abraham, other faculty members, students and members of Bhoomithrasena club. Gluta travancorica is a tree endemic to the southern Western Ghats and its conservation status is 'Near Threatened' according to the IUCN redlist data base ). It used to be exploited in the past by the Travancore kings and later by the British for its red, durable heartwood for constructing buildings, furniture, tool handles, railway sleepers and ships. Though protected under the Kerala Preservation of Tree Act 1986, indiscriminate logging in the past, followed by the changing climate pattern, has narrowed down the tree population into small clusters. Making it an ideal addition to our RET garden Shanthi Sthall. By planting this second 'chenkurinji' tree in the campus, we are also joining with the ongoing 'Save Chenkurinji' campaign which was initiated in July of 2022 by the Kerala Forest Department
  • The Bhoomithrasena Club organized a video screening commemorating World Rainforest Day 2023. The video showcased the incredible journey of three generations of women who transformed their backyard into a thriving forest ecosystem under the stewardship of Kollakkayil Devaki Amma. She began to grow a forest in her backyard garden in Muthukulam, in the Alappuzha district after a car crash prevented her from farming. The forest now covers 4.5 acres and has over 3,000 trees. She has received several awards for her work, including the Nari Shakti Puraskar. By sharing the story of Devaki Amma, her daughter and her granddaughter, the event aimed to educate and inspire students on the small but pertinent roles that they can play in environmental conservation and forestation. Through this event, the Bhoomithrasena Club successfully fostered a sense of responsibility and appreciation for the environment among the students, encouraging them to become active participants in preserving our planet's rainforests. The session concluded with an engaging exercise, during which the club members reflected on the changes they aimed to make in their personal lives for a sustainable future. It was heartening to witness the students' enthusiasm as they enthusiastically jotted down their resolutions to reduce plastic waste, minimize plastic usage, and eliminate rainforest-derived materials from their daily lives. Their strong commitment to embracing sustainable practices showcased their dedication to protecting the environment and preserving the invaluable rainforests. The students' proactive approach and their willingness to take responsibility for creating a more sustainable future was truly inspirational.
