Activities

  • 1. To introduce students to the fundamentals of taxonomy – focusing on morphological, anatomical, and molecular techniques used for species identification. 2. To enhance practical skills in identifying crabs and prawns based on external morphological features such as carapace structure, chelae, rostrum, and pleopods. 3. To understand the ecological significance of crabs and prawns in aquatic ecosystems and their role in maintaining environmental balance. 4. To familiarize students with the importance of taxonomic classification in biodiversity conservation, fisheries management, and ecological research. 5. To encourage research and higher studies in taxonomy, systematics, and marine biology by equipping students with foundational knowledge and skills.
  • The primary objective of the event was to raise awareness about the declining sparrow population and promote conservation efforts by providing safe hydration sources for birds during the summer season. The initiative aimed to instill a sense of responsibility among students and faculty towards environmental conservation and biodiversity protection. Event Highlights In observance of World Sparrow Day, Fatima Mata National College took a compassionate step towards supporting birdlife by ensuring they stay hydrated amid the intense summer heat. The Department of Zoology, in partnership with the Bhoomitrasena and Environmental Clubs, launched an initiative to place water-filled clay pots across the campus, offering birds a much-needed respite from the scorching temperatures. To extend the initiative beyond the college premises, clay pots were also distributed to students, encouraging them to create hydration stations in their homes and neighborhoods, thus fostering a culture of wildlife conservation within the community.
  • • To raise awareness about the impact of plastic pollution on marine biodiversity and coastal ecosystems. • To engage students and volunteers in hands-on conservation efforts. • To promote sustainable waste management practices, including waste segregation and proper disposal. • To encourage responsible tourism and community participation in protecting natural habitats. • To contribute to the Swachh Bharat Mission by maintaining cleanliness in public spaces.
  • 1. Mangrove Conservation & Restoration – To restore and protect the mangrove ecosystem, particularly in the Mukkad Mangrove Area, by focusing on native species such as Ceriops tagal. 2. Community Engagement – To involve local communities, students, and stakeholders in mangrove conservation efforts, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility. 3. Biodiversity Enhancement – To improve habitat quality for wetland birds, fish, and other fauna dependent on mangroves. 4. Awareness & Education – To educate students, researchers, and the general public on the ecological significance of mangroves through field visits and expert-led sessions. 5. Pollution Control & Monitoring – To assess and mitigate pollution impacts, including plastic waste and water contamination, on mangrove ecosystems. 6. Climate Resilience & Carbon Sequestration – To highlight the role of mangroves in mitigating climate change impacts, reducing coastal erosion, and sequestering carbon.
  • 1. Understanding Mangrove Ecology: Educating students and local communities about the significance of mangroves in coastal ecosystems. 2. Threats to Mangroves: Addressing habitat destruction due to urbanization, aquaculture expansion, pollution, and climate change. 3. Conservation Strategies: Promoting afforestation programs, community participation in mangrove restoration, and legal protections for mangrove ecosystems. 4. Livelihood and Sustainability: Highlighting the role of mangroves in sustaining local economies through fisheries, eco-tourism, and natural resource management. 5. Citizen Science and Participation: Encouraging students to engage in research projects, restoration activities, and advocacy for mangrove conservation.
