KSMDB College, Sasthamcotta, established in 1964 in Kunnathur taluk, takes its place in the annals of the history of South Kerala as a revered institution for higher education managed by the Hon’ble Travancore Devaswom Board, and affiliated to the University of Kerala. The college is blessed at the entrance by the temple of Lord Dharma Sastha and is set in the beautiful serene locale on a landmass surrounded on three sides by the famous Sasthamcotta lake, the largest freshwater lake of Kerala and a Ramsar site, lending an aura of grace, reverence for the environment and sense of oneness with the grandeur of Nature. The college was recognised by the University Grants Commission under the 2 (f) and 12 (B) schemes in 1977 and 1979 respectively. Starting with Pre degree courses, the college now caters to the demands of students for 17 undergraduate programmes, 7 post graduate courses, 2 PhD programmes and 2 Diploma programmes. BHOOMITRA SENA CLUB Bhoomithrasena club of KSMDB college aims at encouraging students towards the conservation of the environment .It's on the principle Restore, Recreate and Reimagine. This club marks its seal on every aspect of environmental-related issues as well as social and cultural scenarios.Protecting the ecosystem of the campus,it's various programmes include conservation of natural resources, waste management, anti-drug campaign,growing trees, greening cities, rewilding gardens, cleaning up the lake and so on. The club also conducts various intercollegiate competitions like poster making , video making ,drawing, and cartoon competitions to raise awareness among students.Ms.Lekshmy S Kumar of Department of Botany is the coordinator of the club.

Comprehensive Analysis of Physicochemical and Microbiological Parameters in Sasthamcotta Lake, a Ramsar-Listed Wetland Water pollution from fecal contamination is a significant issue in India, primarily due to untreated sewage. Article 47 of the Indian Constitution mandates the provision of clean drinking water and the improvement of public health standards. Reducing water pollution can decrease waterborne diseases, save costs in water supply, control land degradation, and boost fisheries.This study assessed the physicochemical and microbiological quality of water in Sasthamcotta Lake, a Ramsar-listed wetland. Physical parameters examined included color, odor, pH, and total dissolved solids (TDS). All samples had a pale yellow color with suspended particles, with color and turbidity above permissible limits, but pH and TDS within normal ranges. Chemical parameters studied included total alkalinity, acidity, iron content, nitrates, total hardness, and calcium.Microbiological screening detected fecal coliform bacteria (E. coli) in samples from various parts of the lake, tested at the Kerala Water Authority's Quality Control District Laboratory in Kollam. According to BIS standards, drinking water should have no coliform bacteria.Testing for coliform bacteria can be a reasonable indication of whether other pathogenic bacteria are present as it is easy to identify, present in larger numbers and respond to the wastewater treatment like the pathogenic strains.Samples from the lake basin were tested positive for E. coli and underwent further analysis using direct and dilution plate methods. Results indicated significant contamination, likely stemming from domestic sewage overflow or nonpoint sources of human and animal waste. Contamination levels were substantially above acceptable limits.Local residents were advised to implement simple measures such as chlorination, boiling water, and adding disinfectants to mitigate coliform contamination.The study revealed that access to enhanced sanitation facilities could serve as a critical barrier against microbial contamination of water within household environment and thereby promoting the long-term sustainability of Sasthamkotta lake water quality.

Bhoomitra members of 2020-23 B.Sc Botany batch of KSMDB COLLEGE planted mango saplings in different parts of the campus.Almost 40 local and indigenous varieties were planted.
