Nature Walk to Poongotkaavu Forest at Pazhassi Raja N.S.S.College Mattanur
Bhoomithrasena Club and Department of Botany together organized a Nature walk to Poongottkaavu forest. Poongottu kavu," is a sacred grove, a term referring to a specific type of protected forest area in Kerala, known for its biodiversity and religious significance, and is located in Mattannur muncipality, Kannur District. The area is well known for Myristica swamp forest. Students came across many endangerd species of plants and variety of mushrooms. A critically endangered tree species, Vateria indica, was identified from the Poongottu kavu. Kavus play an important role in stabilizing the ecosystem of the land by conserving soil and water. The small ponds and streams adjoining the kavu are perennial sources of water. The rich debris composition enriches the soil and the nutrients thus generated find their way into the nearby agro system. 43 students from various streams participated in the programme.
