Observance of World Environment Day 2024 at Panampilly Memorial College Chalakudy

World Environment Day 2024 Celebration at Our College

On June 5, 2024, our college observed World Environment Day with a series of impactful activities organized by the Bhoomithrasena Club. The day commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Sathian M.K., Faculty In-Charge of the Bhoomithrasena Club. In his speech, Dr. Sathian emphasized the significance of World Environment Day, which was established by the United Nations in 1972. He highlighted the day's purpose: to raise awareness about environmental issues and encourage proactive measures to protect our planet. This year’s theme, "Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience," was discussed, stressing the importance of these issues in our current environmental context.

Our Principal, Dr. Shaju K.S., inaugurated the function by planting a sapling in front of the Science Block. During his inaugural speech, Dr. Shaju spoke about the concept of green chemistry. He explained that green chemistry focuses on designing chemical products and processes that minimize or eliminate hazardous substances, including greenhouse gases. He emphasized that one of the most effective ways to reduce greenhouse gases is to plant and protect trees.

Approximately 50 students actively participated in the plantation drive, contributing to the cause by planting saplings and creating seed balls, which involved mixing seeds with mud. These activities not only contributed to the environment but also engaged students in hands-on environmental stewardship.

Following the initial celebrations, a poster-making competition was held on June 11, 2024. The theme for the competition was "The Need for Restoration of Ecosystems." Five students participated, showcasing their creativity and understanding of ecosystem restoration through their artwork. Kumari.Nandana M A(2nd year B.Sc Mathematics ), Smt. Maritta N D (3rd year B A Economics) and Kumari. Krishnapriya K S(3rd year B A Political Science) has won 1st, 2nd and 3rd places respectively.

The events of World Environment Day, including sapling planting, seed ball making, and the poster-making competition, successfully raised awareness within the college community about environmental issues and the importance of both individual and collective action. The active involvement of students and faculty members demonstrated a strong commitment to environmental sustainability.

The Bhoomithrasena Club plans to continue its environmental efforts by organizing more activities and promoting sustainable practices throughout the academic year. The enthusiasm and dedication shown during these events reflect our collective commitment to making a positive impact on the environment.
