World wetland land Day celebration: Visit to Kadamakudy at Maharaja's College
As a part of World Wet land Day (February 2nd) celebrations, a visit to nearest wetland, Kadamakudy, was organized on 14th February 2024.
Brochure was circulted among student groups to invite interested students to participate in the visit. Though 28 students gave their names, only 16 could attend due to ongoing internal examinations for third year B.Sc and M.Sc students.
ABOUT KADAMAKKUDY:
Kadamakkudy wetlands is part of Vembanad lake which is one among the Ramsar sites in Kerala. The place is situated around 13 km from Maharaja’s College. The presence of wide variety of migratory birds, Mangroves, Watersheets, Pokalli and Prawn Farmlands are the unique features. Wetlands of Kadamakkudy is disappearing and losing its eco-sensitive character by urbanization and improper use of wetlands. Increasing urban developments and infrastucure is a major threat to the wetlands which disturbs the total ecology of the context. Hence awareness about conservation of this wetland is of utmost importance.

More than 50 species of birds were identified in the wetland. Few of them were: White-breasted Waterhen, Pacific Golden-Plover, Lesser Sand-Plover, Red-wattled Lapwing, Black-tailed Godwit, Common Sandpiper, Spotted Redshank, Common Greenshank, Marsh Sandpiper, Wood Sandpiper, Common Redshank, Brown-headed Gull, Whiskered Tern, Asian Openbill, Oriental Darter, Little Cormorant, Indian Cormorant, Gray Heron, Great Egret, Intermediate Egret, Little Egret, Indian Pond-Heron, Glossy Ibis, Black-headed Ibis, Osprey, Common Kingfisher, Stork-billed Kingfisher, White-throated Kingfisher
Students enjoyed sightseeing and understood the importance of wetland. Common mangrove plants like Sonneratia alba was found abundantly on road sides. Students learnt the need to appreciate the beauty of wetland and also conserve them
