Awareness Talk on ‘Human-Wildlife Conflict: Reasons, Remedies & Challenges’

An awareness talk on ‘Human-Wildlife Conflict: Reasons, Remedies & Challenges’ was organized by Bhoomithrasena Club, Department of Zoology & Environment Club of TKM College of Arts & Science, Kollam, in connection with UN World Wildlife Week 2025. The program was held on 10th March 2025 at 10:00 AM in the Seminar Hall.

The event commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Rohini Krushna MV, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Zoology, who highlighted the relevance of the topic in today’s environmental scenario. The session was presided over by Dr. Boby T Edwin, Vice Principal of the college, who emphasized the significance of conservation initiatives at the institutional and community levels.

The program was inaugurated by the chief guest, Balasankar Ambalapuzha, a renowned wildlife journalist and former Assistant Editor of Aranyam. In his talk, he elaborated on the critical need for conservation strategies to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts. He discussed habitat fragmentation as a major cause of wildlife displacement and emphasized the role of elephant corridors in ensuring the safe movement of wildlife. Additionally, he stressed the importance of sustainable development, balancing human expansion with ecological preservation. His insights shed light on the urgent need for policy interventions and community participation in conservation efforts. Following the talk, Dr. Jasin Rahman VK, Assistant Professor of the Department of Zoology, delivered a felicitation address, appreciating the guest speaker’s valuable contributions to wildlife journalism and conservation awareness.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Mumthas Yahiya, Assistant Professor of the Department of Zoology, who expressed gratitude to the speaker, dignitaries, faculty members, and students for their active participation in making the event a success.
