The Bhoomitrasena Club, in association with the Department of Botany at KE College, Mannanam, organized an extension program titled "Puthunampu" on February 25th, 2024, as part of the "World Forestry Day Observation". The program aimed to promote sustainable living, organic farming, and environmental awareness among the community.
The focal event of the program was the distribution of vegetable saplings to the public, along with a sale of organic vegetables grown by student volunteers of the Bhoomitrasena Club and Botany department. This initiative encouraged the adoption of organic farming practices and promoted healthy eating habits. Furthermore, the money generated through the sale of vegetables was given back to the students as a gesture to encourage farming and agri-entrepreneurship, providing them with a unique opportunity to experience the economic benefits of their hard work and dedication. This innovative approach not only motivated the students to continue their efforts in organic farming but also empowered them to become future agri-entrepreneurs, contributing to the growth of sustainable agriculture in the region.
. Good quality vegetable saplings and seeds were procured from the District Agricultural Farm, Kozha, Kottayam, at subsidized rates, ensuring that the saplings were healthy, disease-free, and suitable for organic farming practices. The vegetable saplings and seeds were distributed to neighborhood houses, promoting community involvement in organic farming. A WhatsApp group was created to monitor progress, provide guidance, and address difficulties faced by participants. Through this online platform, student volunteers and experts offered timely support, shared best practices, and fostered a sense of community among participants, contributing to the initiative's success. To support the sapling distribution, a pamphlet of instructions on sowing and raising vegetables was also distributed. This informative material provided valuable guidance for individuals looking to start their own organic gardens.
Student members of the Bhoomitrasena Club played a vital role in the program, providing awareness on the importance of organic farming and its benefits for human health and the environment. Through interactive sessions and displays, they highlighted the need to shift away from chemical-based farming practices and adopt more sustainable and eco-friendly methods.
The program also served as a platform for the student volunteers to showcase their skills and knowledge in organic farming, gained through their involvement with the Bhoomitrasena Club and Botany department. By engaging with the community and sharing their expertise, they inspired others to take up organic farming and contribute to a more sustainable future.
