Vegetable Trellis and Environmental Conservation Activities
On January 23, 2025, the Bhoomithrasena Club of R.S.M.S.N.D.P. Yogam Arts & Science College, Koyilandy, in collaboration with the Nature Club, organized an environmental conservation initiative aimed at promoting sustainable gardening. As part of this project, a *vegetable trellis was constructed using a metal frame, and saplings of passion fruit (Passiflora) and ivy gourd (Kovakka) were planted to enhance green cover and encourage organic farming practices.
The Bhoomithrasena Club, which receives annual funding from the government, utilizes these resources to implement various environmental projects each year. This year, the club focused on vegetable cultivation and sustainable agriculture* through the installation of a trellis. The necessary materials for the structure were delivered Steel India Komathukara a local enterprise in Koyilandy.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from Bhoomithrasena Club members, Nature Club members, and faculty members, making it an engaging and educational experience for all involved. The initiative was spearheaded by Dr. Mini Abraham, the Bhoomithrasena Club Coordinator, who emphasized the importance of hands-on learning in environmental conservation. Students were actively involved in the planting process, gaining firsthand experience in cultivating vegetables and understanding sustainable farming techniques.
To support plant growth, 10 passion fruit saplings and 4 ivy gourd saplings were carefully planted, and a sturdy metal trellis was installed. The presence and participation of Dr. Sujesh C.P. (Principal of the College) and Mr. Manu P. (Assistant Professor, BBA Department) in the trellis construction alongside students further motivated and encouraged the participants. This activity also served as an awareness campaign, highlighting the significance of environmental conservation and responsible agricultural practices.
Beyond the immediate impact of the vegetable trellis project, the initiative also set the stage for future sustainability efforts. The Bhoomithrasena Club aims to expand its activities by incorporating more native and medicinal plants, conducting workshops on organic farming, and implementing eco-friendly waste management systems within the campus.
This project represents a significant step in the college’s commitment to environmental conservation. The Bhoomithrasena Club remains dedicated to initiating and executing more sustainable projects in the coming years, fostering a culture of ecological responsibility among students and faculty alike.
