Waste Management Audit at Loyola College of Social Sciences
As part of the initiative to audit existing waste management facilities across the state, Bhoomithrasena Club of Loyola College of Social Sciences (BMCTVM/2022/48) conducted a detailed waste management audit at the Material Collection Facility (MCF) in Pattom, Thiruvananthapuram. The audit took place on 17th December 2024, from 2 PM to 5 PM, in collaboration with Suchitwa Mission and the Trivandrum Corporation.
The Bhoomithrasena Club coordinator and few members conducted a preliminary visit to the Pattom MCF at Ulloor on 16th December 2024 to familiarize the facility and its surroundings. The Suchitwa Mission Assistant District Coordinator, Mrs. Suja P. S., ensured full support for the audit and provided valuable insights into the operations of the facility. A poster for the waste management audit was prepared and shared to the students groups. This initiative garnered interest from 30 student volunteers. Travel arrangements, notepads, and pens were provided for smooth execution.
The BMC audit team arrived at the MCF at 2 PM and was warmly welcomed by the MCF workers and other stakeholders. The members conducted random explorations of the plant, closely observing its operations and processes and these observations were documented using geotagged photographs. Data collection was carried out systematically through a the given questionnaire.
The Pattom BMC building spans an area of 2,750 square feet and features a metal-sheet roof structure with a height of 10 meters. The facility is government-owned and serves as a hub for waste management activities. A key operation here is the segregation of plastics, which are sorted into 16 distinct categories. Among these, six are classified as valuable and are further managed by the Clean Kerala Company.
