Report on Nature CAMP at Parambikulam Tiger Reserve
Day 1 : 25/01/2024
Bhoomithrasena Club of NSSCE attended in a 4-day Nature camp at Parambikulam Tiger Reserve from 25th to 28th of January, 2024. The main focus of the camp was to engage in meaningful work to serve the tribal society and to contribute to the overall development of the club members.The camp commenced on 25th January, 2024. The BMC members started their journey to Parambikulam at 10:30 PM and arrived at the campsite by 1:00 PM. The day included an introduction session and a training session. During the introduction program, Mr. R. Sujith,Deputy Director, Parambikulam Tiger Reserve, delivered the welcome address, which was followed by a session by Mr. S Sheikh Hyder Hussain, a distinguished member of Indian Forest Service, who gave a brief about Parambikulam Tiger Reserve. This was followed by a session on the functionalities of root trainers by Dr. P Sujanapal, a distinguished scientist of Kerala Forest Research Institute. This was followed by a practice session in which the BMC Members filled a few root trainers under the instruction of the trainers. Afterwards, the BMC Members were led on a brief sightseeing tour to the Kannimara Teak and they also witnessed a traditional dance performance by the Malasar Tribal Community.
Day 2 : 26/01/2024
The second day of the camp began with an assembly as part of Republic Day celebrations, during which the National Flag was hoisted. Afterwards, the BMC Members were detailed about the work for the day which was planting of seeds in the root trainer. Under the guidance of the authorities, the BMC Members planted nearly 5000 seeds in the nursery. At the bottom of the root trainers, there is a hole and it needs to be filled to avoid the leakage of sand. The BMC Members were taught how to make rooting powder, which is a mixture of sand, soil, and cow dung in a specified proportion. They prepared the rooting powder in the proper proportions, mixed it with the appropriate amount of water, and then placed it in the base of all 5000 root trainers. After that, they filled the remaining area with soil and planted the seeds. The work was performed in a systematic manner. The BMC Members were separated into groups and allocated various phases of the work. The first group was tasked with creating rooting powder, the second with supplying root trainers, trays, rooting powder, and soil to the third, who were tasked with filling the root trainers and planting the seeds. The day also included a bird watching session where the BMC Members got to see different species of birds and the guides provided them with insights into each of them. Afterwards, a documentary onParambikulam Tiger Reserve was screened for the BMC Members.
Day 3 : 27/01/2024
On the third day of the camp, 27th January, 2024, the main work was the reconstruction of bamboo sheds at the Parambikulam Tiger Reserve. The sheds were meant for providing a conducive space for travellers and natives to rest. The BMC Members, under the guidance of Mr.Sughumaran, an instructor of bamboo craft making, reconstructed them. The sheds were in such disrepair that they would collapse within a few months. First, the old sheds were dismantled and then the new ones were built. The BMC Members were separated into groups and given various duties. The first group was tasked with cutting and cleaning the bamboo, as well as creating other shed components such as pillars and seats. The second group was tasked with dismantling the shed and cleaning the surrounding area. The waste was gathered and disposed of correctly. The BMC Members dug the pits for the pillars as instructed, installed them on each side, and then built the roof and seats. The work was completed by 5:00 pm and afterwards, the BMC Members got the opportunity to explore some areas of the forest and the Parambikulam Dam, under the guidance of Mr. Babu.
Day 4 : 28/01/2024
On the last day of the camp, 28th January, 2024, BMC Members went on a trekking expedition in the woods under the instructions of the guide, Mr. Babu. He gave the insights into the forest and its different birds and animal species. They also got the opportunity to walk along the border of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. In the afternoon, the BMC Members visited the Interpretation Centre at Parambikulam Tiger Reserve. Afterwards, the camp was officially concluded by 2:30 pm.The camp was a great success and has left an everlasting impact on the BMC Members. They gained a wide range of values and knowledge from the camp, including, community service and social responsibility, teamwork and leadership skills, cultural awareness, practical skills, environmental consciousness, empathy and compassion, and organisational skills. These experiences have helped in shaping BMC Members perspectives and attitudes towards community
service and societal engagement.
