Disaster justice: the geography of human right, Documentary screening&discussion at EMEA College of Arts and Science, Kondotty

To mark Human Rights Day, a documentary screening and discussion session titled “Disaster Justice: The Geography of Human Rights” was organized on 12th October 2024. The event aimed to create awareness about the intersection of human rights, environmental vulnerability, and social justice, with a special focus on how natural disasters expose and intensify pre-existing social and economic inequalities.

The documentary highlighted how marginalized and vulnerable communities are often disproportionately affected during disasters due to factors such as poverty, inadequate infrastructure, limited access to resources, and weak policy implementation. It emphasized that disasters are not merely natural events, but are deeply influenced by human, political, and geographical factors that determine who suffers the most and who recovers the fastest.

Following the screening, a discussion session was held in which participants reflected on key themes such as unequal distribution of relief, challenges in rehabilitation and resettlement, gender and caste dimensions of disaster impact, and the responsibility of governments and institutions in ensuring equitable disaster response and recovery. The session encouraged critical thinking on disaster preparedness, inclusive planning, and the need to uphold human rights before, during, and after disaster situations.

Overall, the program served as a meaningful platform to sensitize participants about disaster justice and human rights, reinforcing the idea that disaster management must be rooted in fairness, inclusivity, and dignity. The event successfully promoted awareness, empathy, and social responsibility, in alignment with the spirit and significance of Human Rights Day.
