NATIONAL SEMINAR ON PERSPECTIVES ON BIODIVERSITY: CHALLENGES AND RESTORATION at Kuriakose Gregorios College


The Postgraduate department of Zoology, Bhoomitrasena and Nature Club of Kuriakose Gregorios College organised a two-day National Seminar on Perspectives on Biodiversity: Challenges and Restoration, with the financial support from Kerala State Biodiversity Board, on 28th and 29th January 2025. A total of 76 participants registered for the Seminar. The Seminar commenced on 28th January 2025 at 10:00 AM in the RUSA-funded Seminar Hall, Kuriakose Gregorios College, Pampady. The first technical session commenced at 11:15 AM, led by Dr. Abhilasah R., Associate Professor, Department of Zoology, Christian College, Chengannur. His talk, titled ‘The Rhetoric of Optimism: Ecological Restoration for a Struggling Earth’, was engaging and insightful. The session was followed by an interactive discussion where delegates actively participated. The session concluded at 1:00 PM. The second technical session began at 2:00 PM and was conducted in online mode by Prof. Dr. G. Nagendra Prabhu, Head, Department of Zoology, and Principal Investigator, Centre for Research on Aquatic Resources, S. D. College, Alappuzha. He spoke on Challenges and Opportunities on Value Addition of Water Hyacinth, highlighting innovative approaches to managing this invasive species. The session was followed by an interactive discussion. The session ended at 3:30 pm.

The second day commenced at 10:30 AM with the third technical session, led by Dr. Imelda Joseph, Principal Scientist, Mariculture Division, ICAR-CMFRI, Kochi, on the topic ‘Aquaculture Production and Biodiversity Conservation’. The session was followed by an interactive discussion with the delegates. The fourth technical session began at 12:00 PM, conducted by Dr. Jeena N. S., Senior Scientist, Marine Biotechnology and Fish nutrition Division, ICAR-CMFRI, Kochi, on the topic ‘Biodiversity in the Indian EEZ: Challenges and Management’. The session concluded at 1:15 PM after an engaging discussion with the delegates. At 2:00 PM, the paper presentation session commenced, chaired by Ms. Mahima Ann Abraham. Five research scholars presented their work, followed by interactive discussions with participants. The session concluded at 3:15 PM.

The National Seminar on "Perspectives on Biodiversity: Challenges and Restoration" was a resounding success, fostering insightful discussions, knowledge exchange, and academic collaboration. The event provided an enriching platform for students, researchers, and experts to engage in meaningful dialogue on biodiversity conservation and ecological restoration.
