Title: Wetland study tour Mangalavanam
Date and Time: 08/02/2025, 1 day
Venue: Cochin
Organizers: Department of Botany & Biotechnology, Newman College, Thodupuzha
On February 8, 2025, the Department of Botany & Biotechnology from Newman College, Thodupuzha, organized a one-day study tour to Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary in Kochi in observance of the world wetland day. This initiative aimed to immerse participants in the sanctuary's unique wetland ecosystem and engage them in conservation efforts.
Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary, located in the heart of Kochi, serves as a vital green lung for the city, providing sanctuary to numerous migratory and resident bird species. The sanctuary's rich biodiversity includes various species of birds, mammals, amphibians, and aquatic life. However, challenges such as urban waste inflow and inadequate maintenance have threatened its ecological balance.
During the visit, attendees observed various bird species and participated in a cleaning activity to address the prevalent issue of plastic waste accumulation. This hands-on effort not only improved the sanctuary's aesthetic appeal but also mitigated threats to local wildlife. Such activities are crucial, as plastic pollution has been identified as a significant concern for Mangalavanam's ecosystem.
The cleaning drive yielded positive outcomes, enhancing the habitat quality for both migratory and resident birds. However, challenges like continuous waste inflow and the need for regular maintenance highlight the necessity for sustained community involvement and collaboration with local authorities to ensure the long-term preservation of this vital green space.
