Satellite mangrove nursery at Sir Syed College, Taliparamba
With the support of Wild Life trust of India, Kannur Kandal project , a nursery of mangroves launched at Sir Syed college as a part of botanical garden. The existing green house was cleaned and mangrove species were arranged inside it. For this, a mixture of Cow dung powder, soil and sand was filled in small bags in the order of 1; 2 ;1 ratio and then soaked in water for three days. Seeds were collected from various mangrove habitats in Kannur district and these seeds were planted in the bags and fresh water was poured into the bags three times a day. A mixture of bacteria and clay was sprinkled in addition to this. Some species brought from Orissa are preserved here. Mainly the following species are present -Rhizhophora mucronata, R.apiculata,A.officinalis, Ceriops tagal,Bruguiera cylindica, Kandelia kandel etc. The main objective of this is to plant mangroves in various panchayaths of Kannur district in a scientific manner with the help of local people. Mangrove seedlings are delivered to these places with the help of WTI and the students themselves. The first mangrove nursery venture in Kerala has been started here.
