Biodiversity Conservation & Sustainable Development at St. Thomas College, Ranni
In commemoration of World Wildlife Day, Bhoomitrasena Club in association with Department of Zoology organized a seminar on "Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Development." The program aimed to raise awareness among students and faculty about the critical importance of biodiversity for sustainable development and the urgent need for its conservation. The seminar featured expert speakers and included an award ceremony for winners of competitions organized by the Bhoomitrasena Club. Dr. R. Aruna Devy, HOD, Department of Zoology, delivered a warm welcome address, highlighting the significance of World Wildlife Day and setting the stage for the seminar's objectives. Dr. Sneha Elcy Jacob, Principal, provided a comprehensive presidential address. Dr. Arun Sasi S, Lead Scientist, Escientific Solutions, delivered an insightful inaugural address highlighting the current threats to biodiversity globally and locally, focusing on the impact of human activities on wildlife populations. He emphasized the need for innovative solutions and technological advancements in conservation efforts. The technical session was led by Mr. Abhilash G, Assistant Conservator and Working Plan Officer, Achenkovil Ranni Forest Division. He discussed the challenges and successes of managing wildlife populations within the Achenkovil Ranni Forest Division, including strategies for habitat preservation, combating poaching, and community engagement. Following the technical session, certificates and prizes were distributed to the winners of various competitions organized by the Bhoomitrasena Club during the academic year 2024-2025. The competitions aimed to engage students creatively in environmental themes and promote a sense of responsibility towards nature. Ms. Anakha Kumari, I DC Zoology, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the speakers, the Principal, the faculty, the organizing committee, and the participants for their contributions to the success of the seminar.
