Tide Turnes Plastic Challegenge: Orientation Programme at St. Thomas College, Thrissur


The Bhoomithrasena club of St. Thomas College (Autonomous), Thrissur, in association with World Wildlife (WWF), started the Tide Turners Plastic Challenge Programme of United Nations on 08.02.2024. The challenge is designed to inspire young individuals to reflect upon their plastic consumption, discover solutions to reduce this consumption and lead change in their homes, communities, institutions and workplaces. The initiation of the orientation Programme was done by Dr. Geethu Elizabath Thomas, HOD Botany and orientation talks were given by Ms. Anushreedha SS, WWF Project officer and Ms. Anju VN, TTPC Coordinator, WWF India on the topics “Know Your Plastics” and “Tide Turner's Plastic Challenge”.

The Tide Turners Plastic Challenge campaign comprises three phases. First- Educate: in which volunteer will learn through quizzes and discussions about the facts related to the topic through online. Second- Lead: volunteer will be having interaction with the public in order to spread the information the knowledge they gained. The activities must be documented, such as Photographs of peer discussion, screenshots of social media post etc. Third- Leverage: volunteer will be taking all their knowledge and interpersonal skills to the action by. do cleaning drives collectively, give awareness classes in the residential associations, conduct rallies, extend their help to the people working on the cleaning sector. After the successful completion of the challenge, the volunteer will get certificate from the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

Mr. Murukan Pareparambil (WWF Programme officer), Dr Joby Paul, (Faculty in charge of Bhoomithrasena Club), Ms. Sreeshma PS (Research Scholar), Annena Rose KT, and Abitha KA (Student representatives) coordinated the orientation and 45 club members were registered for the TTPC.
