Educational field trip to Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary and CMFRI, Kochi at Mar Athanasius College, Kothamangalam
In observance of the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem on July 24, 2024, the Botany Association "Plures Plantae" of Mar Athanasius College (Autonomous), Kothamangalam in association with the Bhoomithrasena, Biodiversity club and Nature Club organized an educational field trip for second- and final-year B.Sc. Botany students to Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary and the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Kochi. The visit to Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary, often referred to as the "Green Lung of Kochi," provided students with first-hand exposure to the rich biodiversity of mangrove ecosystems. They learned about the ecological significance of mangroves, their role in coastal protection, and the diverse avian species dependent on this habitat. Experts guided the students, explaining various aspects of mangrove conservation and challenges posed by urbanization. At CMFRI, Kochi, students gained insights into marine biodiversity, fisheries research, and aquaculture practices. They interacted with scientists and learned about ongoing research projects related to marine ecosystem conservation and sustainable fisheries management. The field trip was an enriching experience, reinforcing the importance of mangrove conservation and marine ecosystem sustainability, while also enhancing the students' understanding of applied botany and environmental science.
