Social Painting Campaign as part of World Forestry Day 2025 at Panampilly Memorial College Chalakudy
The Bhoomithrasena Club of Panampilly Memorial Govt. College, Chalakudy, in association with the Chalakudy Forest Division and NSS Unit of our college, organized a Social Painting Campaign on 19th March 2025 to celebrate World Wetlands Day2025. The event was held at Nagaravanam, Nayarangadi, a mini-forest developed by the Forest Department near the college.
The Social Painting Campaign was inaugurated by Smt. Praseetha, BFO, Chalakudy Forest Division. The event commenced with a welcome address delivered by Dr. Shiju K, NSS Programme Officer, who extended his greetings to the students and local people gathered for the occasion. Dr. Sathian M K, Faculty in charge of the Bhoomithrasena Club, expressed the vote of thanks, appreciating the participation and enthusiasm of the attendees.
In her inaugural speech, Smt. Praseetha emphasized the critical role of forests in sustaining human existence, preserving biodiversity and mitigating climate change. She also mentioned the theme of this year's Forestry Day, "Forests and Food", stating that forests are not only the "lungs of the Earth" but also a critical source of food for millions of people, particularly for tribal communities and people living near forests. From fruits, nuts, and edible plants to medicinal herbs and honey, forests provide essential nutrition and sustenance. They support indigenous communities, enhance soil fertility, and contribute to sustainable agriculture.
However, deforestation, land degradation and forest fire threaten this vital food source. We lose approximately 10 million hectares of forest every year. This loss disrupts biodiversity, accelerates climate change, and reduces food availability for both humans and wildlife.
She highlighted the importance of collective efforts in forest conservation and encouraged students and local communities to actively participate in environmental protection initiatives.
The Social Painting Campaign witnessed enthusiastic participation from around 45 students and 5 local residents. The participants creatively depicted images of wild animals, forests, and environmental themes, alongside impactful slogans advocating forest conservation. The event provided a platform for artistic expression while reinforcing awareness about the significance of preserving natural ecosystems.
The campaign concluded successfully at 2:00 PM, with participants leaving with a renewed sense of responsibility towards environmental conservation.
On 21st March 2025, as a continuation of the initiative, the volunteers of the Bhoomithrasena Club gathered together and actively engaged in caring for the plants in the newly constructed Nature Park. This collective effort emphasized their commitment to forest protection and environmental sustainability. Through their dedication, they reinforced the importance of preserving green spaces and promoting a healthier ecosystem.
Both the events served as an engaging and educational initiative, aligning with the objectives of World Forestry Day by promoting awareness and action for the protection of forests and biodiversity.
