Paper Bag Making Training and a unit implimentation at Loyola College of Social Sciences

On 17th March 2025, BMC Loyola College of Social Sciences organized an innovative and skill-based training program on paper bag making for the NSS volunteers. The session was facilitated by Sri. Saju Raveendran from Mithranikethan, who brought along his unique invention — the Easy Paper Bag Maker, a machine he developed to simplify and enhance the process of making paper bags. This hands-on training aimed to introduce students to eco-friendly practices and provide them with a creative, practical skill that aligns with sustainability goals.

The training was both interactive and informative, providing students with step-by-step guidance on using the Easy Paper Bag Maker to transform discarded newspaper sheets into functional paper bags. Sri. Saju Raveendran emphasized the environmental hazards posed by plastic pollution and explained how small community initiatives like paper bag making can significantly contribute to environmental conservation efforts. His demonstration not only inspired the students but also opened their eyes to the potential of low-cost technologies in promoting sustainable livelihoods.

A key highlight of the session was the discussion on setting up a small-scale paper bag production unit. Participants explored the feasibility, required resources, and potential impact such a unit could have — both environmentally and economically. The idea of integrating this model into social work interventions or community-based projects was well received by the volunteers, who expressed keen interest in taking the initiative forward.

The programme concluded with the students actively making paper bags from old newspapers and distributing them among campus visitors and nearby shops. The experience served as a meaningful exposure to practical environmental action and reinforced the importance of reusing materials. Overall, the training was a valuable learning opportunity that combined creativity, sustainability, and social responsibility, leaving a lasting impression on all participants.
