SPARROW DAY CELEBRATIONS 2025 at Fatima Mata National College, Kollam
The PG & Research Department of Zoology, in collaboration with the Bhoomitrasena Club and the Environmental Club of Fatima Mata National College (Autonomous), Kollam, with the support of the Sreeman Narayanan Foundation and the Kollam Birding Battalion, organized a meaningful World Sparrow Day celebration on campus.
Objective
The primary objective of the event was to raise awareness about the declining sparrow population and promote conservation efforts by providing safe hydration sources for birds during the summer season. The initiative aimed to instill a sense of responsibility among students and faculty towards environmental conservation and biodiversity protection.
Event Highlights
In observance of World Sparrow Day, Fatima Mata National College took a compassionate step towards supporting birdlife by ensuring they stay hydrated amid the intense summer heat. The Department of Zoology, in partnership with the Bhoomitrasena and Environmental Clubs, launched an initiative to place water-filled clay pots across the campus, offering birds a much-needed respite from the scorching temperatures.
To extend the initiative beyond the college premises, clay pots were also distributed to students, encouraging them to create hydration stations in their homes and neighborhoods, thus fostering a culture of wildlife conservation within the community.
The program was spearheaded by Prof. Dr. Sarlin P. J., Head of the Department of Zoology. The event was inaugurated by Prof. Cynthia Catherine Michael, who distributed the pots to teachers and students, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in conserving bird populations.
