Disaster Risk Reduction Day Observation at Loyola College of Social Sciences

The Bhoomithra Sena Club (BMC) of Loyola College of Social Science observed the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction on 16th October 2024 with a range of awareness-building activities aimed at educating students and the local community on disaster preparedness and management. A key highlight was the disaster exhibition organized on the college campus, specifically curated for school students. The exhibition showcased a wide array of information on different types of disasters—both natural and man-made—along with visual presentations, models, and response strategies. The exhibits emphasized early warning systems, evacuation plans, first aid preparedness, and climate-related hazards, encouraging interactive learning and inquiry among the visiting students. Faculty and student volunteers guided the school visitors through each display, fostering an engaging and educational experience.

In a parallel initiative, a street play was conducted at Kulathur Government High School focusing on the devastating Wayanad Landslide. The play aimed to raise awareness about the causes and consequences of landslides in hilly regions like Wayanad, especially in the context of erratic monsoons and unplanned development. Through dramatization, the play highlighted the loss experienced by affected communities and the importance of preventive and resilience-building measures such as afforestation, slope stabilization, and community-based disaster planning. The performance captured the attention of students and teachers alike, sparking meaningful discussions on disaster risk reduction and the role of youth in promoting safety and sustainability in vulnerable regions.
