WORLD WETLANDS DAY 2024 – WORKSHOP ON THE THEME: WETLANDS AND HUMAN WELL BEING at Kuriakose Gregorios College
As part of the World Wetlands Day Celebration 2024, an action driven Workshop on Wetlands and Human Well being was held on 2 nd February 2024 in association with WWF- India. After an Inaugural Session, the Lead Talk “Wetlands and Human Well-being: How are we treating our wetlands – Case Studies from Kerala” was delivered by Renjan Mathew Varghese, State Director, WWF-India, where in he used examples to make the audience aware of the many ways humans are misusing Wetlands and destroying them. The next session was on the topic Wetlands as Waterbird Habitats – Bird Surveys and Monitoring by A.K. Sivakumar, Senior Education Officer, WWF-India. Through the talk, the participants got to know how the status of birds are intertwined with the state of Wetlands, especially that of Wetland Birds. The importance of this intimate organic connection was also made evident in the discourse. This was followed by an inspiring session on Wetland Biomonitoring in DFF under WWF-India People4Planet by Anushreedha Sivanandan, Project Officer, WWF-India which helped us to get to know more about Odonates and Wetlands. After lunch there was action based session on Tide Turners Plastic Challenge Journey led by A.K. Sivakumar, Senior Education Officer, WWF-India where our students registered themselves in the Tide Turners Plastic Challenge and took the decision to make a change in their habit of using plastics. The Wetlands Documentary by Shri. Suresh Elamon, Nature & Wildlife Photographer & Documentary Maker was screened later. The last and probably the most fruitful session was the Brainstorming/ Group Activity for drawing up Action Plan for Local Wetland Protection where students were divided into groups and were prompted to come with ideas on various aspects of Wetland conservation.
