YOUTH MEETS HARITHAKARMASENA at Aligarh Muslim University Centre Malappuram

A team of six members of the Bhoomithrasena Club of Aligarh Muslim University Malappuram Centre attended the District Level “Youth Meets Haritha Karma Sena” campaign at Keezhattoor Panchayath conducted by Suchitwa Mission, Government of Kerala 0n 18 February 2024. The campaign aimed at promoting awareness among the youth on the activities and work of the Haritha Karma Sena units of Local Self Government (LSG) Department, Government of Kerala. Haritha Karma Sena is an initiative tasked with the collection, segregation and recycling of waste produced in households and business firms across Kerala.

The campaign started around 10:00 AM with a banging ice-breaking session for the youth volunteers and Harith Karma Sena members of the Keezhattoor panchayath. It was followed by the inaugural address of the Panchayath President. Ward members, Panchayath Secretary, government officials and civil society members delivered felicitations.

In the interactive session, the organizers explained the working of Haritha Karma Sena in Kerala. They highlighted the history of Haritha Karma Sena and various hurdles they faced in implementing the mandate of the Sena. Members of the Haritha Karma Sena shared their experiences in their work. They highlighted that at the initial stages of the initiative they were met with resistances and hardships. However, the attitude of the public towards them now is not that much hostile, and they are able to generate substantial income for their work in the way of user-fee and recycling.

Youth volunteers accompanied the Haritha Sena members to village households where they demonstrated their work. They gather waste from households and store it in mini-MCF (material collection facilities), from where the waste is then transferred to main-MCF. The waste is segregated in the main-MCF into different categories and is pressed using a hydraulic press for the convenience of storage and transportation. At the end of the month, the waste collected and segregated is auctioned to the highest bidder. The money is used to pay salaries to the Haritha Karma Sena members.

Last session of the campaign was marked with the youth volunteers expressing their gratitude and feedback for the opportunity. Mr. Younus V I, Mr. Mohamed Sinan K P, Mr. Mohammed Noufal K T, Mr. Mohammed Assaf Ali, Mr. Muhammed Aflah M.P and Mr. Mohammed Noufal K T are the members of the team. They are awarded certificates of appreciation by Suchitwa Mission.
