Environment Day celebration and Establishment of "Nagaravanam" at St Berchmans College (Autonomous) Changanacherry


The World Environment Day celebration for 2024 was held at Padiyara Hall on the 5th of June from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM. The event marked the district-level inauguration of World Environment Day and the commencement of Bhoomitrasena's academic year activities. The function was well-attended, with a total of 110 participants, including distinguished guests, faculty members, students, officers from the Forest department and environmental enthusiasts.

Welcome Speech: Mr. Subhash KB, Assistant Conservator of Forest, delivered the welcome speech, setting the tone for the day's proceedings. His address highlighted the importance of environmental conservation and the role of community involvement in safeguarding our natural resources.

Presidential Address: Rev. Dr. James Palackal, Manager of St. Berchmans College, gave the presidential address. He emphasized the importance of nurturing the environment and the significant impact educational institutions can have in promoting sustainability.

Inauguration: The formal inauguration was conducted by Mr. Pramod P P, IFS, Chief Conservator of Forest & Field Director, Project Tiger, Kottayam. His speech focused on the current challenges in conservation and the initiatives being taken at the individual level to address these issues. He encouraged active participation from all sectors of society to achieve environmental goals.

Felicitation: Several esteemed guests were felicitated during the event for their contributions to environmental conservation and education:

  • Ms. Neethu Lekshmi M, IFS, Conservator (I & E), Kottayam, shared her experiences as an IFS officer, motivating the students with stories of her journey and emphasizing the importance of dedication, passion, and hard work in achieving their goals. She also encouraged them to actively participate in environmental conservation efforts.
  • Rev. Fr. Reji P Kurian, Principal, St. Berchmans College, provided clear directions on waste segregation and the preservation of trees. He stressed the importance of maintaining a clean and green campus and encouraged students to adopt environmentally friendly practices in their daily lives.

Their presence and contributions were acknowledged, underscoring the collective effort required for environmental protection.

Vote of Thanks: Mr. Jebin Joseph, Assistant Professor & FIC, Bhoomitrasena, delivered the vote of thanks. He expressed gratitude to all the dignitaries, participants, and organizers for their contribution to the successful conduct of the event.

Special Inauguration: "Nagaravanam" Social Forest: As part of the celebrations, Ms. Neethu Lekshmi M, IFS, inaugurated the "Nagaravanam" social forest on the college campus. A total of 400 saplings were planted, marking a significant step towards increasing green cover and promoting biodiversity within the campus. The initiative was well-received, and participants enthusiastically took part in the planting activities, showcasing their commitment to environmental conservation.

The event concluded with a renewed pledge by all attendees to continue their efforts in protecting and nurturing the environment, making this World Environment Day a memorable and impactful occasion.
