Birds of Passage - Exploring Kumarakom's migratory marvels at Naipunnya School of Management, Cherthala
On 19th October 2024, the Nature Club of Naipunnya School of Management, Cherthala, organized an educational trip to the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary for its second and third-year Rithu club members. The purpose of this visit was to provide students with a hands-on experience of observing birds in their natural habitat and to enhance their understanding of the importance of conservation and biodiversity. The sanctuary, located on the banks of Vembanad Lake in Kerala, is renowned for its rich variety of bird species, both migratory and native. This visit allowed the students to witness nature’s beauty up close and appreciate the ecological significance of this sanctuary.
The day started early, with around 21 students gathering at the campus at 9:00 AM, excited for the day’s adventure. The students, accompanied by two Nature Club coordinators, embarked on their journey in a college bus. During the bus ride, the students discussed various bird species they hoped to see and shared knowledge about birdwatching techniques, which set a positive tone for the day’s activities. The scenic drive through lush greenery provided a preview of the natural wonders awaiting them at the sanctuary.
The group reached Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary at around 10:30 AM. Upon arrival, the sanctuary’s guide welcomed the students and provided a brief introduction to the sanctuary, highlighting its history, geography, and the diverse bird species that migrate to the area annually. The students were informed about the sanctuary's role in the preservation of wetlands and the significance of Vembanad Lake as a habitat for birds. The guide emphasized the importance of maintaining silence and respecting the natural environment during their visit to minimize disturbances to the wildlife.
The guided tour began at 10:30 AM, with the students walking along the well-maintained trails of the sanctuary. The cool morning breeze and the calls of various birds created an ambiance that heightened the excitement among the students. Equipped with cameras, they observed a wide range of bird species including egrets, herons, cormorants, and kingfishers. The sanctuary is home to both resident and migratory birds, with the migratory season beginning in October. Students were thrilled to catch glimpses of some early arrivals like Siberian storks and teals.
The guide shared information about the habits, migratory patterns, and unique features of the birds spotted. This knowledge enriched the students' understanding and allowed them to better appreciate the diversity of birdlife. They also had the opportunity to observe the lush mangrove forests that serve as nesting grounds for many of these birds.
One of the highlights of the visit was the climb to the watchtower, which offered a panoramic view of the surrounding areas, including the Vembanad Lake. From this vantage point, the students could see flocks of birds flying across the lake, creating a breathtaking sight. The guide pointed out the various species visible from the tower, including flocks of ducks, herons, and cormorants. The watchtower provided an ideal spot for photography, allowing the students to capture the beauty of the sanctuary and migratory bird “greater flamingo”.
The visit to Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary was an enriching experience for the Nature Club members of Naipunnya School of Management, Cherthala. It provided a valuable opportunity for students to connect with nature and observe a wide variety of bird species in their natural habitat. The trip not only deepened their knowledge of avian life but also instilled a sense of responsibility towards environmental conservation. The visit served as a reminder of the delicate balance that exists between humans and nature, and the need to preserve such ecosystems for future generations.
